Interview with an Experienced Mompreneur

Today we get some words of wisdom from Sandra Blesser, as woman who developed her own unique and patented product, the Room To Grow 4 in 1 Play Yard. She developed her product over 20 years ago, before mompreneur was even a recognizable word. The play yard is perfect for that mompreneur on the go, especially if you need to travel with the tots. I will personally endores this product as I have seen it in action. Though this is technically a “baby product,” it ultimately will help new moms to get out there in the world to travel or take a moment to exercise/read with peace a mind. Sandra has also touched my nonprofit heart, as she donates her products to nonprofits in need through her Dreamers & Doers program.

Brief Bio:

The Hotseat:

1. Tell us about what inspired you to become a Mompreneur.

Mompreneur was a draw to me because it is a great source of information and a rekindling of my own passions to bring to market improved products for other families.

2. What is one thing that you think that all moms planning to start their own business should know?

Moms who want to start their own business need to know; it takes twice as much $ and time as you think but never give up…just ask for more help.

3. How were you able to balance being a mom and an entrepreneur?

Balancing parenthood and being an entrepreneur is a juggling act which takes practice, organization and asking for help.

4. What is your opinion on large businesses that seek out moms who want to work at home? Do you think that these are good options or should women just focusing on doing their own thing?

Working at home for a large company or working for yourself at home still requires setting up good work habits and being disciplined. Not everyone can do it because of the distractions…again ask for help and work at times of the day that you can get the most done with the least interruptions.

5. What is one technological device that you can not live without?

The most valuable device other than my computer is my cell phone capabilities to check e-mails when I am out of the office and running the errands of life.

6. How were you able to fund your business as a start-up?

I was able to get a signature loan for the business to get started and then I borrowed on the equity of my home to help back myself up when the business could not pay me a salary. I also work for a hospital system a few days a week.

7. How were you able to overcome the “glass ceiling”?

Gentle perseverance as it is an ongoing condition of life and will probably always be present to some degree.

8. Are you able to take time for yourself to focus on your own health and wellness?

It has to be a priority to keep your ship afloat.

9. Do you think your family life suffered because of your work ethic?

No because Family takes precedence.

10. Tell us more about your product. How did you come up with the idea? How were you able to make your idea turn into a tangible item?

Necessity is truly the mother of invention….we were traveling to NC mountains. I needed a safe and easy solution to accomodate my 6 month old baby that would fit in my bag on the airplane. I soon found that other parents needed the same solution and that’s how I began the venture.

She also offers WAHM’s the opportunity to sell her products and even get products for themselves or to give to friends/ charities.
