Welcome to day #5 of our review-a-thon. Today we are reviewing the Bellybar line of products made by Nutrabella. This review is a bit of a combo review. Theresa reviewed the products as a pregnant mom and Heather as a new mom. Their website had these cool nutrition facts, so we figured we’d post them.

Theresa says:

All I have to say is yummy, yummy, yummy!  I tried the Mellow Oat first which is oat graham and yogurt covering half of the bar. I love yogurt and oatmeal. With my iron still low these Belly Bars have 18 mg iron, plus 800mg of Folic Acid and 8 g of Protein.

I also received a Due for Chocolate milkshake. So for all of us chocolate lovers that is a definite bonus! It was very good, made with real milk without any growth hormones.

The bars and shakes are fortified with all the supplemental nutrients required in a normal pregnancy. The more notable nutrients we expectant mamas need the Bellybar has:  800 mg Folic Acid, 8 g Protein and 18 mg of Iron – something I need mroe of! While Bellybar products are made with no GMOs or growth hormones, they are not certified organic, even though they are labeled “All Natural” because ingredients like brown rice syrup, cane juice etc. No high fructose corn syrup and the like.

I actually think it’s ingenious for Nutrabella to cater to expectant mamas. I love bars like this, so even if they are not certified organic I plan to check to see if our local Walgreens carries them. I find bars high in protein give me an extra boost throughout the day.

INGREDIENTS: Nonfat Milk, Water, Sugar, Cream, Chicory Root Extract (Soluble Fiber), Natural Flavors, Alkalized Cocoa, Whey Protein Concentrate, Carrageenan and Calcium Citrate.
FORTIFIED WITH: Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) [from algae], Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Ascorbate (Vit C), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vit B6) and Folic Acid.

Heather Says:

In concept, I love the fact that Nutrabella is trying to help pregnant and new moms snack without guilt. It’s a shame I didn’t know about these when I was pregnant. I got to try their line of products, but since Theresa already described two of them, I will describe the rest that came in the package.

First up, Baby Needs Chocolate. I really love the names they chose. This bar was pretty good, but can’t really compare to the kind that is bad for you 🙂 But still, it is better than nothing. The bars are more like cereal bars than candy bars.

INGREDIENTS: Brown Rice Syrup, Oats, Milk Chocolate (Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Milk, Chocolate Liquor, Dextrose, Soy Lecithin, Vanilla), Soy Crisp (Soy Protein, Tapioca Starch, Salt), Toffee (Evaporated Cane Juice, Butter [Cream, Salt], Crisp Rice [Rice Flour, Sugar, Malt Extract, Salt], Molasses, Non-Fat Dry Milk, Salt) Brown Rice Crisp (Brown Rice Flour, Rice Flour, Distilled Monoglycerides), Soy Nuts (Soybeans, Sugar, Natural Flavors, Sunflower Oil, Salt), Solnuts, Almonds, Vegetable Glycerin, Cocoa Butter, Cocoa Powder, Pear Juice Concentrate, Non-Fat Dry Milk, Natural Flavor.
FORTIFIED WITH: Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Citrate, Cholecalciferol (Vit D3), Potassium Iodide (Iodine), Choline Bitartrate, Ascorbic Acid (Vit C), Zinc Oxide
CONTAINS: Milk, Soy. May Contain: Tree Nut, Peanut. No Hydrogenated Oils.

My favorite of all of the products was the Berry Nutty Cravings bar. It tasted like the other bars in the store, but these are specially designed for expecting moms. They had a bit of a dried berry sweet flavoring.

INGREDIENTS: Brown Rice Syrup, Soy Crisp (Soy Protein, Tapioca Starch, Salt), Yogurt Coating (Sugar, Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil, Whey Powder, Non-Fat Dry Milk Powder, Yogurt Powder [Cultured Whey, Non-Fat], Soy Lecithin, Vanilla), Soybeans, Oats, Pear Juice Concentrate, Dried Fruit (Cranberries, Blueberries, Sugar, Sunflower Oil), Brown Rice Crisp (Brown Rice Flour, Rice Flour, Distilled Monoglycerides), Almonds, Vegetable Glycerin, Granola (Whole Rolled Oats, Expeller Pressed Canola Oil, Evaporated Cane Juice, Oat Bran), Cocoa Butter, Non-Fat Dry Milk Powder, Natural Flavor, Citric Acid.
FORTIFIED WITH: Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Citrate, Cholecalciferol (Vit D3), Potassium Iodide (Iodine), Choline Bitartrate, Ascorbic Acid (Vit C), Zinc Oxide
CONTAINS: Mlik, Soy. May Contain: Tree Nut, Peanut. No Hydrogenated Oils.

I also tried the Citrus On Board chews. These really weren’t my cup of tea. This might be because I don’t like many orange flavored products, opting to eat an actual orange instead. The citrus was very strong, so I could only eat one. The texture was smooth and a bit like taffy, but not as tough. I think they sent the chocolate ones too, but they mysteriously disappeared before I could try them……

INGREDIENTS: Corn Syrup, Sugar Palm Kernel Oil, Citric Acid, Mono & Diglycerides (Vegetable Source), Natural Flavors, Non-GMO Soy Lecithin.
FORTIFIED WITH: Calcium Citrate, Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) [from algae], Vitamin D3, Vitamin K1, Folic Acid (Folate).
CONTAINS: Trace Amounts of Dairy, Peanut, Almond, Walnut, Pecan, Nutmeg and Soy Protein.

Again, overall I like the concept. I do think that they could do a little more work on tweaking the flavors a bit, but they do taste good for being more health oriented products. The way they ship them was in an nice organza bag with everything in it. I think they should offer that as something you can purchase to add to a gift basket or something similar. Just a thought.

Buy Them

They have an online store where you can purchase their products. You can visit it now and sign-up for their mailing list to receive a coupon.

Although I received samples of their products to try out, this in no way affected my review. I was not monetarily compensated for this review.

Hmmmmm…you can make your own with out all the “extras” in there. One bar had chocolate liquor to sweeten. Why not use something like dates to sweeten? Making your own is fun, easy and you KNOW everything in it. All in all, looks like an OK product. But buyer beware, and read your labels, no matter what it is! 🙂
